Best time to visit Sri Lanka: a month-by-month guide
There is no bad month to visit Sri Lanka — only bad month-and-coast combinations. Two opposing monsoons mean one half of the island is almost always dry. Here is which half, when, and what it means for your route.
The basics
Two monsoons, one island, always a dry coast
Sri Lanka does not have a rainy season. It has two, and they hit opposite halves of the island at opposite times of year. Once that clicks, planning becomes simple.
The southwest monsoon (Yala) runs roughly May to September and soaks the south coast, the west coast and the hill country. The northeast monsoon (Maha) runs roughly October to January and does the same to the east and north. Between them sit two inter-monsoon periods — April and October–November — when rain can appear anywhere, usually as short afternoon storms.
So the question is never "is it a good time to visit Sri Lanka?" It is "which coast should I be on in my month?"
The short version: December to March, go south and west. May to September, go east. April and October–November, go inland to the cultural triangle and accept some rain.

What each season actually feels like
December to March — the classic window
This is high season for a reason. The south coast beaches are calm and swimmable, the cultural triangle is dry, the hill country is clear in the mornings, and whale watching runs off Mirissa. It is also the most expensive and the busiest, particularly the fortnight around Christmas and New Year, when guesthouse rates in Ella and Mirissa can double.
April — the hot inter-monsoon
Briefly, both coasts work. It is also the hottest month in the lowlands and it contains Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April, when the country effectively shuts for several days, transport fills and domestic tourism spikes. Lovely to witness, hard to move around in.
May to September — go east
The southwest monsoon arrives and the tourist map flips. Arugam Bay enters surf season, Trincomalee and Nilaveli offer flat, clear water, and the cultural triangle stays workable. The hill country gets misty and dramatic rather than washed out — Ella in July is still very much worth doing.
October and November — the cheap gamble
The wettest stretch nationally, because the second inter-monsoon overlaps both systems. Prices fall accordingly. If you are flexible, travelling inland and accepting afternoon rain buys you an empty Sigiriya and half-price rooms.

Timing your trip around the animals
Sri Lanka's wildlife calendar does not follow the tourist calendar, and getting it wrong is the single most expensive planning error we see.
- Whale watching, Mirissa (south): November to April.
- Whale watching, Trincomalee (east): May to October.

Culture
Festivals worth planning around
Esala Perahera, Kandy — usually July or August, ten nights of processions, dancers and tusker elephants. Dates move with the lunar calendar and rooms sell out months ahead.
Sinhala and Tamil New Year — mid-April. Families travel, businesses close, and the roads are chaotic. Wonderful if you have a local connection, awkward if you are trying to cover ground.
Vesak — the May full moon. Lanterns everywhere and free food stalls (dansal) on the roadsides. One of the most beautiful nights of the year to be in Colombo.
Adam's Peak pilgrimage season — roughly December to May. Outside those months the summit path is unlit and the weather is poor.
Poya days — every full moon — are public holidays with no alcohol sales and closed bars. Not a problem, but worth knowing before you plan a big night.

So when should you go?
If you can travel any month: February. Everything except the east coast is at its best.
If you want the east coast, surf or the Perahera: July or August.
If you want the lowest prices and don't mind rain: late October or November.
