I’ll be in Sri Lanka for two weeks in August, visiting places like Colombo, Kandy, Ella, and the South Coast. I know the weather can be tricky that time of year with rain in some areas. Any packing advice from travellers who’ve done it before? Things you wish you had packed (or didn’t need at all)?
What should I pack for a 2-week trip around Sri Lanka in August?

Hey, just adding a quick note: if you’re visiting temples, pack something to cover shoulders and knees. A light scarf or shawl works perfectly and doesn’t take up space. I also carried a sarong that doubled up as beachwear and temple wear. Super handy!
Fellow traveller here :) don’t underestimate the little things. Bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen (it’s expensive locally), and a reusable water bottle. Also, a power adapter (Sri Lanka uses Type D and G plugs). I found a small dry bag super useful for beach days and boat rides. And if you’re into trains, pack some snacks because the ride from Kandy to Ella is long and food options are limited on board.
Hi there, shoes were the thing I got wrong on my first trip! Bring comfy walking sandals or trainers for sightseeing. You’ll climb a lot (Sigiriya, temples, tea estates), so flip-flops alone won’t cut it. I used sneakers most days and flip-flops just for the beach. If you plan on hiking, a pair of lightweight trekking shoes helps too.
Hey! I was in Sri Lanka last August and the weather was all over the place. Definitely pack light cotton clothes because it gets hot and humid, especially on the coast. But don’t forget a light jacket or hoodie for Ella and Nuwara Eliya, it gets chilly in the evenings. Also, carry a rain jacket or a compact umbrella. I packed jeans and honestly wore them only once… shorts and light trousers are much better.
