Is street food in Sri Lanka safe to eat? Any must-try dishes?

asked by Isabella Rodriguez • 5 months ago

I love trying local food when I travel but I’m a bit cautious about street food. I’ll be in Colombo, Galle, and Kandy during my trip. Is it safe to eat street food in Sri Lanka? And what are the street foods I absolutely shouldn’t miss?

If you’re vegetarian, Sri Lanka is heaven! Street vendors sell lentil fritters, vegetable roti, and coconut pancakes. Super filling and budget-friendly. I had no stomach issues, just followed the “eat where it’s busy” rule. Bonus tip: carry some wet wipes, they come in handy.

I was a little worried too, but street food was actually one of my highlights in Sri Lanka. I loved egg hoppers with a bit of chili sambol <3 so cheap and so good. Also, the fresh fruit juices from roadside stands are great, just make sure they don’t add tap water or ice (ask for no ice, just to be safe).

Hi fellow foodie! Definitely try kottu roti!!!! it’s basically chopped flatbread stir-fried with veggies, egg, or meat, and it’s cooked hot and fresh right in front of you. Another one is isso wade (prawn fritters),you’ll find them at Galle Face Green in Colombo, super tasty! Don’t miss hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes) for breakfast. Sweet or savory, both are amazing.

Hey! I ate tons of street food in Sri Lanka and didn’t get sick once. The golden rule: go where the locals are. If a stall is busy, the food is fresh and safe. Avoid anything that looks like it’s been sitting around too long. I carried hand sanitizer just in case. Bottled water is widely available, so stick to that.
